The Oil Tasting Glass

It’s probably that you have ever seen them, but do you know why they are like this? Who decided their design? How to use them in the best way? Where to get them?

In the search for homogenizing the tasting of the extra virgin olive oil among the tasting panels of the different countries, they looked for the normalization of the glass in which the tasting was going to be done. And it was in June 1987, when the International Olive Council (COI), launched the COI/T.20/Doc. nº 5 standard, where it describes the specifications that said glass must have.

The glass’s morphology responds to these characteristics, it is adapted to the optimal sensorial analysis of an Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO).

  • The glass is in blue color, to avoid seeing the oil’s color, since this attribute can create prejudice among the members of a panel or a jury (in the case of contests).
  • The glass is wide at the bottom for a greater stability and it can be more difficult the oil spillage. This wider surface also allows the oil to be perfectly heated by hand, or in the heaters used in the laboratories for this purpose, releasing all its flavor.

The complement of the glasses is a glass cover used for avoiding the oil’s aromas to escape, called Watch Glass.

In regard to the dimensions that a standard glass has according to the IOC, we have:

Manufactured with dark glass, for not allowing to see the color of the oil, this glass has to be resistant so it is annealed to harden it. It should not contain any irregularities such as bubbles and deformities.

In order to make a right use of the glass, first, we must check out that they are completely clean. For this aim, unscented cleaning agents are used, and the glasses shall be rinsed until these soaps or detergents are completely removed.

The technique for using it, it’s the following:

  • Introduce 15 ml oil into the glass.
  • Hold the glass and the watch glass and heat the base, making small rotary abrasion movements with the palm of your hand.

  • Tilt and turn the glass, so that the largest quantity of surface can be impregnated.
  • Lift the «watch glass» up and perform the first olfaction, which is going to give us great information mainly in a summarized way, it will tell us if that oil smells good or if it smells bad. Immediately, the glass has to be covered in order to avoid losing the aromas.
  • Perform all the needed olfaction (without saturating the senses), until being able to get conclusions.

  • Put a small sip of oil into the mouth and spread out through all the oral cavity so that our taste buds can analyze it.

  • Taking advantage of the fact that the oil inside the mouth reaches the perfect temperature to release organoleptic properties, we aspirate to analyze its flavor.
  • Swallow the oil and analyze with this action, its itching, bitterness and astringency.

The tasting glasses prices vary according to the purchased quantities, including the price range from 3 to 6 euros.

Offcine Panerai «Mare Nostrum Acciao»

Clifton’s history has naturally grown and developed over the years but it has always kept the brand’s philosophy at its heart: “Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality.”

And so each year, Swiss watchmakers have imagined unique and accessible watches which respond to the expectations of the most exacting aficionados.
The natural result of all this is the Clifton Chronograph Complete Calendar.
This beautiful watch combines Baume & Mercier’s tradition and expertise. A heritage that is rich with more than 186 years of uninterrupted history.

A contemporary approach to fine watchmaking

Behind its well-balanced lines, with its vintage spirit of the 1950s, the Clifton Chronograph Complete Calendar sets itself apart as a watch with a hefty dose of personality.

The perfect expression of Baume & Mercier’s watchmaking culture, the watch offers two complications: a bi-compax chronograph as well as a complete calendar. Ephemerality in all its splendor with a display for the day and the month, the date, the moon phases, and to complete it all, a 24h indicator which is very useful for adjustments.
The heart of the mechanism is a self-winding Swiss Valjoux caliber visible through the sapphire crystal case back with an oscillating weight that is personalized Baume & Mercier and decorated with the Côtes de Genève.

A watch for the man who always has time on his side.

This new timepiece is a reflection of the Clifton man.

A city man on a quest for elegance. An energetic man, sometimes in a hurry, with a desire to master his time—making the chronograph an indispensable tool. Ambitious, impassioned, he wants to go farther, discover the key to fine watchmaking; a complication like a Complete Calendar beckons him through its door.

An indispensable partner for all situations
The Clifton Chronograph Complete Calendar, an indispensable timepiece available in three versions.

The first, luxurious and affordable, is offered in a 43 mm steel case, equipped with a two-tone steel bezel topped with 18 carat red gold and mounted on a black alligator strap. A true classic dedicated to the distinguished and confident man, someone who desires an exclusive and singular timepiece appropriate for everyday wear at the office as well as in the evening while dining out.

The second version is offered in a case which emphasizes a playful contrast between its polished and satin-finished steel. A variation emphasizing discretion because of its steel, all while maintaining its refined touch with its black alligator strap. Perfect for everyday wear by the man who is both energetic and urban.

Finally, the third variation offers a version mounted on a steel bracelet, with its structured links. A detail imbued here with all its importance. Thus accessorized, the Clifton Chronograph Complete Calendar showcases a new personality, a watch with a sporty look for an active and busy man.

The Clifton Chronograph Complete Calendar, a new affordable must-have item. A beautiful watch powered by a watchmaking mechanism, a testament to contemporary man’s most powerful life moments.

Chopard «Happy Ocean»

A colorful nautical adventure

Ever since it was launched, the Happy Sport collection has been an undeniable success. Over the years, it has been enriched with original creations, occasionally offbeat but consistently delightful. This year, Chopard is once again reinvigorating this iconic collection with the new Happy Ocean. Both sporty and elegant, Happy Ocean is the ideal watch for exploring the ocean floor, relaxing on a yacht or strolling on the sand. As technical as it is fun, it is water-resistant to 300 metres and beats to the rhythm of a self-winding Chopard movement.

For more than 20 years, the Happy Sport line has delighted fans of chic, sporty watches. The first of its kind when it was launched in 1993, the concept combines the nobility of diamonds with steel. Free of any setting, diamonds frolic between two sapphire crystals, illuminating the entire dial. Each model breathes new life to the collection. In the case of Happy Ocean, it’s a sea breeze that is energising the Happy Sport universe!

Change course for the ocean
Happy Ocean focuses on a nautical adventure. Combined with a large 40 mm steel case, the unidirectional rotating bezel with its two-tone blue-turquoise or blue- raspberry coloring is inspired by azure blue shades and brightly colored corals, while featuring a wave-shaped design for easier handling under water. The screw-down crown is marked with a C and the case-back is engraved with a wave motif. The intense blue dial brings to mind the ocean depths and is enhanced with a white minutes hand hemmed with blue or raspberry that glows at night or in dark, deep waters. The hour-markers and hours hands also illuminate with a blue hue, with all other indications required for diving in green. Five moving diamonds, like oxygen bubbles or tiny sparkling fish, swim around this beautiful aquarium. Floating with total freedom and the weightlessness experienced underwater…

Water-resistant to 300 metres, the Happy Ocean watch is powered by a self-winding Chopard movement (01.01-C) entirely developed and produced in the workshops of the Maison in Fleurier. And finally, a first for Chopard’s ladies’ watches in the form of a NATO strap – a sporty, light, fun material suited to all weather conditions and occasions.

A porthole opening onto an endless world of seaside pleasures, Happy Ocean is an invitation to head for the open waters. Inspiring daydreams of a sunny, warm day on the beach, this timepiece conjures up images of that perfect summer dip in the shimmering blue sea.
